Our plan to visit Calicut or Kozikode (as it is currently called) was not planned. It was one of those tick mark places and since we were planning to attend the Premananda Memorial conference on Jan 29-30th, we thought lets combine this visit by checking out Calicut.
The best mode to reach Calicut is by Train. There is a over night train from Yeshwantpur Banaglore and will reach Calicut around 6:30AM. Calicut is not a tourist destination as such. It is a more of a stop over or a place where one would break the journey when traveling long distance. We did some research on the places to see in Calicut. Apart from the main beach, Kappad beach - where Vasco-da-gama landed and a museum, there is nothing much to do or see in Calicut.
Beach Heritage hotel (http://www.beachheritage.com) facing the sea is a decent place to stay. Since there was nothing much to do, we spent most of the time on this beach. With high hopes, we went to see the museum, but were disappointed. There was no power and the museum had no alternate power source. It was pitch dark inside. When we checked with the security, he mentioned the power would come only by 5PM and by then the museum would be closed. Apart from us, there was not a single visitor to this museum. Visit to Kappad beach would take around 4 hours (including return time).
We spent some time in the market, shopping for Kerala halwa, banana and jackfruit chips. With nothing much to do we ended up seeing a circus which was running there. Another thing I noticed was, there is no much option for vegetarians. Most of the restaurants had very few veg options.
